Week 17 2B: HSA and Research Essay Prep

This week's HSA INDICATORS: December 12-18: Do the online exercise for indicators 1.3.5 and 2.2.2. DUE BY SUNDAY MIDNIGHT, December 18.

This week you only have to send me your results.  Don't worry about answering the three questions below related to the HSA indicators.  Instead, after reading over the handout for your second quarter narrative research essay (under Forms and Docs on class website), answer the following questions in the comments section below:

1. List your topic for your narrative research essay about a theme related to something we've studied second quarter and briefly discuss how you are going to integrate research into your essay.  What story are you going to tell?  How will you connect your research to this?

Example: For my second quarter narrative research essay I'm going to tell the story of how my mom got arrested at a non-violent protest a few months ago.  She was protesting the Tar Sands pipeline from Alberta Canada all the way to Texas.  In my paper I'll tell the story of the day she was arrested and how I brought my boys downtown to watch their grandmother get arrested in front of the White House with hundreds of other individuals peacefully demonstrating against a project that could harm the environment seriously.  I'll then relate this story to events in Animal Farm (i.e. how the animals are afraid to protest against Napoleon even when they feel he is breaking the law) and selections from the blindness unit (how leaders can be blinded by money and funding from big business instead of protecting the environment).  I'll also try relating this paper to the Occupy Wall Street movement somehow.  For my research, I'm going to find two books and two Internet sources that deal with global warming, big oil, the environmental movement, and civil disobedience/protest so I can relate this information to my specific topic.

2. Discuss the books/Internet sources you've found so far, if any.  If you've found them, please try put them in the correct MLA citation format below in the comments section (examples below to use as references).  If you don't get this done by Sunday night, that's okay.  But you'll need to have it done by midnight on Wednesday, December 21 before you go away on Christmas break.

Example: I have not had a chance to research my sources yet.  I know this is due next week before Christmas break, so I'll get cracking on this.

For each book, list the citation:

Citing a book. Author. Title of Book (underlined). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. For example: Brown, Dan. The Da Vinci Code. New York: Random House, 2003.

Example:

Depastino, Todd. Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2003.

For each Internet site, list the full citation:

For citing an individual work on the Internet: Author. Title. Date on page (if given). Name of  Associated Institution (if given; underlined). Date of access < web address>. For example: Downer, Jillian. In Her Shoes. 18 May 2008. The Shoe Dish. 24 May 2008 <http://theshoedish.com>.

Example:
Homelessness and Poverty in America. National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. 11 October 2011. < http://www.nlchp.org/hapia.cfm>

DON'T FORGET TO SEND YOUR RESULTS TO ME VIA EMAIL WITH YOUR NAME AND CLASS PERIOD IN SUBJECT LINE, OR BRING A PRINT OUT OF YOUR RESULTS TO CLASS ON MONDAY/TUESDAY.  DON'T FORGET TO RESPOND TO THE THREE BLOG QUESTIONS BELOW!!!

THIS QUARTER YOUR ONLINE HOMEWORK WILL COUNT AS A TEST GRADE RATHER THAN A HOMEWORK GRADE, SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU COMPLETE THESE EXERCISES ONLINE!

Online HSA Practice Schedule:

This week you'll CONTINUE your online HSA review course for the second quarter. The instructions for completing this are REPEATED below.  They are the same steps from the first quarter.  If you already know how to do this, you can ignore them!  If you still need the instructions, follow the steps and you'll get your weekly homework credit. It's that simple! It will take you about fifteen minutes or so to complete each indicator.

For this homework assignment you'll get to practice answering HSA-style questions. The system will tell you what you get right and wrong, and you'll have a chance to correct yourself and learn from your mistakes. We'll go over all of this material in class, but this give you an opportunity to get more practice in at home!

Each week leading up to the Second Quarter HSA Benchmark in mid January (window is open from January 9-19, and you'll probably take your test on the 16th or 17th) you'll have to complete test questions for two separate indicators. The schedule is spelled out below. Additionally, your blog response for the next five weeks will be centered around your work on this HSA review website.

Homework Schedule for Second Quarter indicators:

November 28 - December 4: Do the online exercises for indicators 1.1.3 and 1.2.1

December 5-11: Do the online exercises for indicators 1.2.4 and 1.2.5

December 12 –18: Do the online exercises for indicators 1.3.5 and 2.2.2

December  26- January 1: Christmas Break/Catch Up on Indicators you Didn't Complete!

January 2– 8: Do the online exercise for indicators 3.1.6 and 3.1.8

January 9-15: Review all 10 indicators in preparation for FAST Benchmark on Monday, January 16th or Tuesday, January 17th.  Complete any exercises for indicators that you didn't complete online for partial credit.

  1. 1.I was thinking about how the pigs in Animal Farm were trying to stifle the sheep whenever they would bring up how something was changed around.I would try and connect this with the occupy wallstreet movement, and how the protesters are trying to speak up about something peacefully but authorities are trying to keep them quiet by forcing them out, arresting them, or both.I could pick a story from many of the articles that cover the displacement of protesters in many different states.I would most likely pick books speaking about the Gov't keeping society quiet and holding back societies speech.

    1. I would talk about how parents are blinded by showing favoritism, and how they sometimes end up showing one child less support and attention, leaving them to feel unappreciated and resentment. I will relate this to a story about my older sister, Tymeka, and I. Also, I will relate it to the movie My Sister's Keeper. I will include research by taking a survey of my peers and adults. I can also use internet research.

  3. 1. I choose to talk about bullying again because I did it with my speech and it's just so close to me. I choose this topic because it relates to Animal Farm, how Napoleon would torture the other animals A.K.A bullying. And as far as the internet sources I have them but the books I'm going to work on later this week.

I Chose to talk about using violence to gain power. i chose this because i don't think a lot of people would choose the topic and because it seems as if it would be an interesting thing to talk about. I also chose it because it relates to Napolean's tactics of using the dogs to remain in control. I am still in the process of getting my sources

I will tell a story about how I pretended to be something for so long, because I was afraid of what my parents', friends, & family wouldve thought. Im going to connect this to the "Seeing Without Seeing" unit , because I felt I was being blinded by their expectations. I chose this topic because I want to encourage others not to be something they arent, because of what someone else might feel about it. I will do a survey on gay teens in my community (male & female), havent quite got any sources. Still pondering on where i would do research and find books on this topic.

    1. I was thinking about doing my research essay to talk about blindness. I considered relating this topic to Animal Farm. One way to do this would be discuss how the animals weren't able to see that Napoleon was actually the evil one throughout the story & only wanted to get Snowball. I also considered the literal term of blindness if Mario Bond were to come in.

    2. I'll find the website sources & books this weekend.

1.My essay is going to be about the time my mom's car was stolen and I possibly was awake through it all. I plan to integrate research into my essay by book sources detailing the topic of victims in crime and coping with the situation.I plan to connect this to our studies because I was blinded by the naive idea that theft could never occur to my family and how I felt I was deprived of something that was rightfully mine's, like the animals in Manor Farm.

2.My two books are on being the victim of a crime and coping with encounters with the crime and dealing with police. These books will offer valuable insight to my mothers rights and possible fealings. My two internet sources also include information on dealing with being the victim of a crime and facts on auto theft which will add statistics to my essay.

1.) I was thinking about doing my project on being afraid to stand up for yourself or for your own rights. I want to connect this theme to Animal Farm. This is a good example because it shows how the animals in the passage were too scared to speak up for themselves, so instead the went along with anything the pigs said. I would probably tell a story about how I see some of my peers in Crossland not wanting to stand up for themselves due to fear or what others may think of them because of the outcome.

2.) I haven't started my research for the books and websites but I'll be sure to get that done soon.

  9. 1. My narrative research essay will be about bullying and how bullying connects to animal farm like Napoleon the way he treated snowball , the hens , boxer and the other animals. My essay will show everything about bullying and how it relates to real world bullying and animal farm bullying. Of course Napoleon will be the mean big pig that bullies everyone.

    2. I have no sources yet. Still looking for them.

1.My narrative research essay will be about animal cruelty. It is a good example because i am a animal lover and there are a lot of animals that are bullied, beaten for no reason with no one to stand up for them.

    2. Should have my sources by Tuesday.

  11. 1. My narrative essay will be about being abused (verbally) by authority figures. This will connect to when I was at a ROTC camp for a week.

    2. I haven't found any good resources to use yet, but I will find them.

    1. For my narrative research essay i will be talking about the topic of using force to put fear in people and use them as slaves. This connects to animal far because the pigs used these tatics on the farm to gain control. The story I will tell is how slaves were treated in this same way.
    2. I am still looking for my sources and should have them soon.

    1. For my essay I will write about how people follow other's and want to be friends with them just because they have power. This connects to the book because the pigs and sheep followed Napoleons wrong ways because of his power.

    2. I don't have my sources yet I will have them this week.

  15. Terrell Kornegay, 2B

    1. My narrative research paper will be about how the media is influences the information people obtain. This can be connected to animal farm in the way that Squealer is metaphorically the media and the media controller and how he controls the information coming to the animals. An example would be of how Squealer said that Boxer was going to a hospital but he was actually going to a glue factory.

    2. At this very moment, I do not have any sources.

    1. My narrative essay will be about the lack of education/how people take education for granted and how that connects to how the dumg animals in animal farm, because of their stupidity, would go along with any thing even though they doubt it sometimes.

    2. I havent gotten to finding my resources for my essay, but i'll be sure to find them get cracking on my essay.

p.s. i found my notebook with my work in it, but i forgot to some after school to show it to u...hope i can still show u that, even if i only get partial credit
