Week 4: 2B HSA Online Practice Schedule and Directions

Online HSA Practice Schedule:

This week you'll begin your online HSA review course. The instructions for completing this are below. Follow the steps and you'll get your weekly homework credit. It's that simple! It will take you about fifteen minutes or so to complete each indicator review.

For this homework assignment you'll get to practice answering HSA-style questions. The sytem will tell you what you get right and wrong, and you'll have a chance to correct yourself and learn from your mistakes. We'll go over all of this material in class, but this give you an opportunity to get more practice in at home!

Each week leading up to the HSA Benchmark in late October you'll have to complete test questions for two separate indicators. The schedule is spelled out below. Aditionally, your blog reponse for the next five weeks will be centered around your work on this HSA review website.

Here are the three questions you'll have to answer every week in the comments section of this blog:

1. What concepts/ideas did you learn about when you studied the two HSA indicators for this week's homework?

Example Response: This week I worked on questions that dealt with pre-reading and during reading strategies (indicators 1.1.1 and 1.1.2). In these questions I learned how to...

2. What was easy/difficult for you in these questions? How did you do on each indictor? Did you score over or under 50% (i.e. 5/10)? Be specific!

Example Response: I found these questions very easy because I am a strong reader. I was able to use the reading strategies I learned in night grade and the strategies we're working on with Mr. Sabath to answer all of these questions. Some of the passages were a bit long, but I know I have to get used to reading on these tests. The poetry was also a bit tricky, so I'd like to get more practice reading poetry in this class with you, Mr. Sabath! Despite this, I got 90% of all the questions right for each indicator, so I think I'm ready for these kind of questions. (Or, I got less than 50% right on these questions, so I need extra practice with these kinds of questions that will appear on the HSA).

3. What is your opinion of this online test prep site? Why do you like it? Why don't you like it? Be specific!

Example Reponse: I love this site because it gives me a chance to practice my test-taking strategies.

The strategies I learned are reading the intro to give you background info and using other words in a sentence to find the meaning of 1 word. The indicators were easy to me. I received a 9/10(90%) on Indicator 1.1.1 and 8/10(80%) on Indicator 1.1.2. I like the website because it corrects you and tells you why your answers wrong and the questions on the website are almost identical to the ones on the actual HSA.

1.I learned that a prudent reader would take into account all aspects of a passage, pictures, introduction, or arrangment of text to understand its meaning and answer questions.

2.9/10 were easy the questions have the potential to be challenging but the answer choices have to resembe eachother better. What I found difficult were the long reading passages, maintaining an interest and keeping up with the text flow. I recieved a 9/10 and 10/10 respectively.

I like this website because we can only see the test during the test and now we have the oppurtunity to see it all day every day.

1.)For this week's indicators I learned that by just reading the title and first couple of paragraphs you can get an idea of what the passage/poem may be about, which makes its easier to understand what you're reading.

2.)To me the questions weren't that difficult you just had to fully understand what the questions were asking you. For indicator 1.1.1 I scored a 8 out of 8 and for indicator 1.1.2 I scored a 9 out of 10.

3.)I like this website because after you have answered a question whether its right or wrong it explains each answer to you so you know why or why not you got the question right. So I believe this will help to improve my test-taking skills.

    1. In indicator 1.1.1 I was tested on predicting what the passage would be about based on the introduction or first few paragraphs, and what topics would best prepare a reader to read a passage. In indicator 1.1.2 i was tested onwhat the words most likely mean and the purpose of the passage , and also how to you can tell what you're reading is a poem.

    2. The questions were all easy. On indicator 1.1.1 I recived 90%(7/8) and on indicator 1.1.2 I recived 80%(8/10).

    3. I like the website. I like how if you get an answer wrong it lets you choose again, I also like how it doesnt give us to many questions to answer
