Week 24 Blog 3B: Writing Sonnets

This week you're going to write your third poem for your project, which will be a rough draft of a sonnet.  Here's what you need to know about sonnets:

What is a sonnet?
  = 14 line poem
  = little song in Italian; originated in Italy
  = subject is often ROMANTIC LOVE
What is an English/Shakespearean sonnet?
  =Fixed structure (three quatrains – ababcdcdefef; followed by one couplet – gg

TASK: Write a sonnet about the subject of love. It needs to be 14 lines and should use the rhyme scheme above that we talked about in class. Use the poems we read in class as your models to follow when you write your own. Remember, this is a "write-like" poem, so you should try to write like the authors of the poems below. Your poem should pose a question/situation/problem, a turning point, and a resolution - just like the sonnets did that we read in class. Post your poem in the comment section below, and send to Mr. Sabath via email (peter.sabath@pgcps.org):

Sonnet 18
Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade

Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;

Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

Sonnet 30
Edna St. Vincent Millay

Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution’s power,
might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. But I do not think I would.

People think love can be short and sweet. but there are times when people want to compete they think they can impress girl with shoes cars that's where things begin to twurl you might say you would do anything for her but tell the truth would you love is this love is fast understand how long this might last and when it's gone you reminess about the past This is what love mean to me this is what love suppose to be to be who you are. and see how that will get you far. Love for granted

    Some people take love as a joke;
    Some people say they love you but is that true;
    They might hug or kiss you but it can make you choke.
    They might only come once in a blue.
    But True Love is about caring;
    True love can be a wonderful thing;
    True love can be daring;
    If you've had enough go out and buy yourself some bling.
    They might say they love you but they'll buy themsevles leather;
    They might say they love you when they call;
    Maybe one day you will learn to work together;
    You may find out that ya love was never real at all.
    Love can be weak;
    Love can be strong;
    But all love is never truly to last long.

    Sonnet - Love In My Heart is Forever
    By Marlyn Tyler 3B

    Love has passed me by,
    My heart is broken,
    I have tears in my eyes;
    As these words were spoken,
    I asked the question, “Why?”
    But, she could not come up with an answer;
    The only thing she could say was “bye.”
    Her face looked as if she had been stricken with cancer,
    I said, “please explain , I need an explanation,”
    Her face was as white as a ghost,
    She starred with contemplation;
    Speak up your response means the most,
    The love in my heart is forever,
    You and me as a couple together.

    What Went Wrong With This Love?

    You filled my life with joy,
    Made my nights so memorable.
    Now everything is so destroyed,
    I hate that it's unforgetable.

    But I never said I'd lie,
    and wait forever.
    If we died,
    we'd die together.

    Every hit you took,
    every scream I'd make.
    It had me all shook,
    now I lie here awake.

    Thinkig what went wrong,
    in our beautiful song.

    One day, when life is past, and I depart
    And I no longer linger at your side,
    When time and space and fate hold us apart,
    May I still in your heart of hearts reside.
    But while I walk on earth I hope to stay
    Forever in your thoughts and your embrace;
    And when from mortal life I walk away
    May I imagine sadness in your face.
    What better testimony to our love
    Could ever exist than sweet remembrance dear?
    If I yet yearn for you when I'm above
    I'll not be lost because your love is near.
    Your love, my love, redeems me utterly,
    For here and now, and for eternity.

    One day i remember when me and you was sitting down
    having the greastet staring contest
    just thinking how much i know you are the best
    as you whisper in my ear and tell me how much you love me,
    it gave me butterflies in my stomach.
    our love take us through many obstacles
    but if you are staying strong
    we all know where you belong
    and thats in my heart.
    i'll never have fear
    if i know your are near.
    together and forever
    til death do us apart.

    I Remember The Time That We Spend
    When We Would Sit And Laugh All Day.
    I Sit And Reread The Text Messages That You Send,
    But Why Did You Have To Move So Far Away ?
    All I Ever Wanted Was You,
    But Now That Your Gone
    I Have Found A New Boo
    I Will Always Remember Our Special Bond.
    I Thought That You And Me Was Forever
    When You Came Back
    We Was No Longer Together
    And You Don't Know How To Act.
    All You Did Was Lie
    But Now It's Time To Say Goodbye.

    Sonnet- Is love everything?

    Is love everything or is it just something that we wish for
    Can it console us when we are feeling neglected
    can it protect us when our hearts are sore
    can it wipe the tears we shed

    can it bring happiness and joy
    is it a cure for our pain
    can it take away the decisions we destroyed
    is love something we try to abstain

    without love our lives are lost
    But with love it has a risk and a cause

    Every moment spent with you is like a beautiful dream come true...

    My favorite place to be is inside of your hugs where it's warm and loving. I Love You!

    Kiss me and you shall see stars, love me and I'll give them to you.

    I love you with everything I am, and more than anyone ever thought possible...

    You may not be here with me... But thoughts of you are always in my heart... I Miss You!

    sonnet: thank you for being you...
    thank you for your selfless deeds
    thank you for that love so pure
    you always think of all my needs
    looking ahead, i feel secure.
    your path has always been humble and kind
    i love you for making each day bright
    you held my hand, when my path was blind
    those things you do, are a true delight
    I love you with my entire heart
    from the beginning, you were there for me
    it hurts a lot when we're apart
    i will give you, the sky and sea.
    My precious love that i truly adore,
    every day with you, i wish to explore.

    As soon as I had hinted that direction
    I couldn't say how I really feel
    I was ashamed that I would get such a rejection
    I didn't want to go through hell

    Our memories were long lasting
    But for a second I couldn't tell
    Everything doesn't have to be about broadcasting
    I thought I really fell

    It hurt seeing you walk away
    Don't you think it's a little too early
    Why would you pick today?
    Now my vision is seen kind of blurry

    Love can never go blind
    Because your the only thing on my mind

  13. Sunday
    By Jerome Gordon 3b
    Sunday is the best day of week;
    It`s the best day because I eat chicken;
    The bone of the chicken stuck in my teeth;
    I leave the table and go in the kitchen;
    To get a tooth stick;
    So that I can take out that uncomfortable bone
    Before I get sick;
    I guess that is a good tone;
    I thought that this Sunday was fun;
    But it is the worst of them all;
    I feel like would just kill myself with a gun;
    So that I will never see the rainfall;
    This is a very bad day for me;
    I hope u all see.

    The One I Love
    The one I love with all my might.
    The one I’m thinking of tonight.
    The one that helps me make things right.
    The one I dream of when I sleep at night.
    The one I think of when I hug my pillow tight.
    The one I’m not giving up without putting up a fight.
    The one I always want in my sight.
    The one I think of day and night.
    The one I'd give a chance to make things right.
    The one that makes me wanna take flight.
    These are the things about the one I love.
    Her love's so right, it fits like a glove.
    The one that I love, and the one I like ,
    Is the one I want for the rest of my life.
