This week we'll start reading a series of three speeches. This week we'll focus on Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman" speech. Here's what you have to do for this week's blog response:
Think about an issue (problem) in your school, neighborhood, country, or world. Take a minute to jot down a problem that you'd like to speak about later in this unit, such as neighborhood rivalries, homelessness, racism, guns/violence, or teen pregnancy. These are just a few examples. Answer the questions that follow:
1. What is the problem you've identified?
2. Why is this a problem to your mind?
3. Why would you like to write a speech about this problem?
4. What are some solutions to the problem?
5. How would you persuade your classmates to changes their believes about this problem you've identified?

ReplyDeleteThe problem that I have idientified in my community, country and world is males degrading women, and females degrading themselves.
In my mind, this is a problem because women being degraded is not cute, not what's cool, and is derfinately not a joke or a laughing matter!!! Its disrespectful, it hurts people's self-esteem, and very often I see females degrading themselves-and finding it funny. And it's not! I feel as though this problem needs to be addressed now so the world can see how serious this is. If this continues the result will be an on-going cycle of women being disrespected by men and themselves. I would like to write a speech concerning this matter. Some solutions to the problem could be encouraging females to start with themselves, and start respecting themselves first, so that other people can too. Also, to encourage them to teach their daughters to love and respect themselves, and their sons how to treat a female. Lastly, stress the fact that this matter is not cute and it's not funny.
I would persuade my classmates to change their minds by writing a speech and using a real example from a real male and female in school seeing as how disrespect of young women is seen EVERY SINGLE DAY in Crossland.

ReplyDelete1.False sense of perfection.
2.Too many people grow up being told that they are "special" or "exceptional" and it's dentrimental to their development into adults.
3.This is an issue I see everyday in media and real life so the examples I could draw are endless, also as one of the few who are uneffected by this I present an unbiased view.
4.No more "all games end in ties" rule or "everyone gets a trophy". If you win you win and if you lose accept it.
5.I would inform them that this perception can lead to a distortion of who you really are. You may become what others want you to be or you'll wander aimlessly in an internal identity crisis.
I would let them know that hardwork outweighs any title one places upon them.
1. Bullying
ReplyDelete2. This is a problem to my mind because being made fun of , tease , or getting beat up is not cool.
3.I would write a speech on this problem stating that it should stop and that people die over this situation and those who are being bullied can get help.
4. Counseling , Therapy , Group Activities to stop all of this from happening.
5. I will get my classmates to change by explaining all the bad causes bullying can lead to and how would they feel if they were in the shoes of those that been bullied.
The problem I identfied is society's idea of the perfect American Girl. Famous people do things to be noticed. People like Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga do certain things and wear certain things to be noticed for their creativity and talent. However, society takes their most squalid and vulgar pictures and lines and promote them to the public more than the clean moments. I have a problem with this because not only are men expecting us to act a certain way but women themselves are changing the way they walk, talk, act, and even think in order to fit these fictious images. I would like to write a speech about this because people, especially girls, need to know theirs no such thing as perfection. Second, it's not what you own that makes you. You are unique because of your personality and your mind not what you have or what you can offer with your money. Society will never stop advocating these ideas of the "perfect woman" so the only solution to this problem is to talk to these people and hope they get the message and promote difference. Unfortunately, there is no way to persuade with my peers about this because you can't change anyones mind. You can only hope.
ReplyDelete1. Prince George's County rule on paying 50 dollars in order to play any sport.
ReplyDelete2. Many student athletes cannot afford to pay the amount of money required, therefore, not allowing them to play in any sport in high school. And without them paying the money required, there will be no soccer, basketball, or football team.
3. This new rule for PGCPS is unreasonable to all student athletes that participate in any after school program and we are also in an economic crisis, so how will be able to meet the requirements the Board of Education gives to us?
4. One solution would be the student athletes who cannot afford to pay the required amount can play any sport for free, regardless of who they are.
5. I would use other examples that relates to my subject, such as students not being able to eat lunch because of their parents not having enough money to give to their child every day, or not having the materials needed for each class because of insufficient funds.
1.The problem that I have identified is the maintenance of my community.
ReplyDelete2.This is a problem because there shouldnt be trash flying around outside.
3.I would like to write a speech about this to show others how I feel about the look of my community and so this problem could be solved.
4.Getting people in the community to come out and contribute to cleaning the neihborhood.
5.I would put them in my shoes and ask them how would they feel about it.

ReplyDelete1. The problem i have identified is high gas prices.
2. This is a problem to my mind because I am 15. So I will be driving soon and by then gas prices will probably be around 5 dollars. Then when i'm grown it will be maybe 2 times that. Which is why this is a big problem.
3. I would write a speech about this situation because it is a problem for everyone. not everybody has a decent paying job so if gas prices keep rising people wont be able to afford it.
4. Some solutions to this problem are toswitch to an electric car, ride the train, ride your bike, or just walk.
5. I would persuade my classmates about this situation by telling them how benificial any of the solutins I pointed out would be. I would consider that they atleast think about this issue.

ReplyDeleteA common problem in my community is the amount of teen abortions. I feel as though teens as well as some adults don't understand the seriousness of an abortions. People look to abortions as a "QUICK fix", and its much more than that. There really isn't much i can say to a teen, being as though they're going to do what they want anyway, but i always encourage them to practice SAFE sex. I would change my classmates' view of abortions by informing them about the negative effects an abortion can have on them. I will also tell them about the physical and or emotional toll an abortion can take on NOT only them, but their loved ones.
Kenya Lorick 2B
ReplyDelete1.The problem Ive identified is the use of illegal drugs.
2.This is a problem in my mind because I see a lot of teenagers doing drugs each day and it is not good for them.
3.I would like to write a speech on this so i can show the seriousness of this problem and how it may affect their life and their future.
4.Some solutions to this problem are not to sell teenagers drugs, keep them busy & away from drugs people who use them.
5.I'd show them facts on how their life could mess up,and how it could affect others around them.
Jazmin Horton-2B
ReplyDeleteThe problem I identified was gang violence/ neighborhood rivalries. I chose this issue, because nowadays it is getting worse than what it was before.I would like to write a speech about it, because it's really being talked about or handled. Some solutions could be taking youth off the streets and putting them into activities and also taking guns off the streets, you have to have a license to carry one. I would change their perception about it, by giving them real life example of what is going on, and how lives are affected by it.
Tatiana Salazar 2B
ReplyDelete1. A problem I have identified in our country is our government fully funds the military and bearly funds the public education systems.
2. This is a problem in my mind because I am a student and I don't think its righ that we aren't doing the best we can in school because the government isn't funding our neccecary supplies.
3. I would like to write a speech about this problem because the goverment should really put more effort into funding the schools.
4. Some solutions to this problem are the government should fund both the schools and the military equally the same.
5. I would persude my classmates to change their beliefs about this problem becuase it really affects how education and where we are in education compared to India and China
Fatima Ahmed 2B
ReplyDelete1. Obesity
2. People are dying over fixable problems like obesity
3. Alot of kids nowadays are eating foods like mcdonalds, or eating too much junk food than recommended, and its taking a high toll on there health, and i want to raise awareness of the risks of eating to many things that arent good for you
4. some communities could start local garden or replace some school lunch options with healthier choices
5. i could show them some statistics like how over 1 in 5 children between the ages of 6 and 17 are considered overweight and how the obesity rate has tripled since the early 1970s
Charles Owens 2B
ReplyDelete1.Racism
2.I don't like how people people get treated differently because of the color of their skin.
3.I would like to write about this issue because I think it is a huge problem in this world.
4.Sit down and talk about why people feel they should treat people differently and with disrespect.
5.Tell them how I fell about the situation maybe they will listen
Juwan Whitaker 2b
ReplyDelete1 Loitering in the hallways around my neighborhood.
2 This is a problem in my mind because at night there is always teens in the hallway smoking marajuana, shooting dice and leaving trash in the stairway.
The elderly are sometimes frightened to walk in and out the buildings at night, but they should feel safe in there own home's.
3.I would like to write about this issue because I think it could put someone's life in danger. Also because loiteting, shooting dice and smoking marajuana is illegal.
4.Have undercover police officers monitor and patrol inside the buildings.
5. I would try to influence my classmates not to loiter and smoke in the hallways or anywhere because its unhealthy and it can get you in serious trouble with the law.

ReplyDelete1. The problem that I've identified is the narrow mindedness of people these days.
2. This is a problem in my mind because it not only affects the people around a narrow minded person, but it affects the narrow minded person as well. A narrow minded person loses so much experience in life that they could have gotten.
3. I want this to be addressed and I want people to actually think about it instead of just shrug it off.
4. The solution to this would be to open your mind. I can't really force you to be more open but when you're more open minded and you teach the future generations to be more open minded, the world can be at least a little more livable.
5. A way I can persuade my classmates into being more open minded is through talking to them about fun, interesting things that happened to me and other people through their open mindedness and how life would be, or how I think life would be, if there were more open minded people. Another good way of persuasion is showing the difference between the general narrow minded person and the general open minded person.

ReplyDelete1.The problem that i have identified is teen pregnancy.
2.This is a problem in my mind because to many teens fail to realize that the responsibilty in being a parent is not something that should be done by a child.
3.I would like to write a speech about this problem so that children my age can understand the sacrifice and responsibilty that is needed when you decide to have a child.
4. A solution to this problem would be to talk to someone about wanting to be a parent and how it will effect you and your future or birth control.
5. I would persuade my classmates to changes their believes about the problem I've identified by showing them the cost & the sacrifices and responsibilites that they have to take on by using my life as an example , by being a teenage mother myself.
Ray Vann 2B
ReplyDeleteThe issue that i have pick is Every person in the world not uderstanding that we are all special.
This is a problem in my mind beacuse in so many ways people grow felling as though they are not good enough and ever being showed notice when they work hard to win something or do something even if they fail.
I want this to be addressed so that we can all see ourselves and others in a different light that instead of us making it always about if you win or not but to know that you still did you best and that you are still special.
The solution would be to have parents let thier kids know that they are specail no matter what so that way they can have a stronger drive and determination to go far.
I can persuade my classmates by having them understand that not matter if that fail they are special and that they will always have a purpose

ReplyDelete1.Schools' Boundary Changes
2.This causes kids to transfer to different schools. I think that the student should be able to make the decision of whether they want to attend another school or not.
3.I would like to write about this issue because it may eventually persuade the school to change their boundaries back.
4.Set a certain radius you have to live in to attend the school. Also for some people that can't attend here because they live on the wrong street, work something out with them.
5.I would try to get them to see the problem from my perspective.
1.A problem I see in my neighborhood daily is the out use of the word B__ch teens, forced to have sex,and of course drug use.
ReplyDelete2.It's a problem in my mind because teens now a days has done more in their 15,16 years of life than an thirty yr old man.
3.I would like to speak on this topic because the adults need to know what goes on in their life outside home.
4.Some solutions to this problem would be, if a teen is sexually active make sure they have plenty of condoms. Teens that smoke maybe monthly drug test to make sure they stay clean. people that have potty mouths i really don't have a solution for that.
5.If they continue to smoke weed, have unprotected sex ditch school and do nothing then by the time they are a legal adult yhu would dumb as a bag of bricks have 4,5 kids baby mama drama and a itch you can't stop.

ReplyDelete1. The problem in my neighborhood is gay bashing and fears of being yourself.
2. Its a problen to me because I see a lot of hurt an pain cause to the people I surround myself with.
3. I would like to speak on this topic because I can relate to people out in the world thats going through the issue.
4. Some solutions to the problem is to always be true to yourslef, parents can be accepting to their child if he/she announces that they're gay, and counseling can be offered to those persons who feel that its needed.
5. I would persuade my classmates that its ok to be gay and its ok to believe in what you believe in because at the end of the day its about your life and how you live it.
Dammien Wells 2B
ReplyDelete1. The problem in my neighborhood is that people try to be a certain way just because they think its a trend.
2.This is a problem to me because people think being a certain religion is cool.
3.I would like to write on this subject to show people that doing something you see someone else does not make you cool.
4. Some solutions to this problem is to be yourself and not care what people say about you.
5.I would persuade my classmates to just be their selves instead of doing what they see others do.
Anja Perry 2B
ReplyDelete1. The problem i would like to adress deals with the littering & pollution of the Potomic River & the Chesapeake Bay.
2.This is a problem because our main source of water is being contaminated every time someone decides they dont want to use a trash can or recycling bin, they throw their waste on the streets or down a sewage system that is clearly labled for you NOT to dispose of your trash.
3.I want to write on this topic because the majority of the food we eat, like fish, consists of water we get from the Potomic & the Chesapeake. The waters are filthy and contaminated... What if the contamination gets into our bodys and we become ill? I want to raise the awareness of pollution and how it really effects us.
4. One solution to this problem would be to have waste bins close by the drainage systems that way people won't be tempted to throw their garbage down into them.
5. I want to persuade my classmates to be more caring about the environment. I want them to understand that littering not only kills the earth but it kills us too.
Wow, I'm really impressed with the ideas that you all came up with as a class. These problems and the solutions you discuss will make for some incredible speeches in the near future. 1.I think that a problem that is growing in this community is teens who have little or no self-esteem.
ReplyDelete2.This is a problem because if this continues to go unnoticed then more and more teens are going to fall into depression, get addicted and dependent on drugs, have suicidal and kill themselves, or just become emotionless and anti-social.
3.I would like to speak on this problem because I have seen people who have little self-esteem and are hard on themselves for no reason, and to me that is just depressing to look at.
4.Some solutions to this problem would be to have adults in communities to pay more attention to teens actions. Also to make sure that they make that teen feel like he or she is encouraged and not discouraged.
5.I am not really sure yet, but I would probably use statistics and show how many teens commit suicide each year because of insecurity and low self-esteem.

ReplyDelete1. I chose to kind of go off Sojourner Truth's topic and talk about how men have the more dominant role in society and i don't think it should be that way.
2. I think this is a problem because our country is SUPPOSED to be founded on an equal system where woman and men should be treated the same and given the same opportunities/ amount of respect.
3. I would like to speak on this problem because i don't want the kids of the future ( more so women ) have to deal with a male-dominant society and think they must be submissive.
4. Some solutions may include women coming together to form women unions , having organizations to empower women to do better , and groups to get the word / news out on how women can do anything a man can do.
5. I will use collective data / statistics to help support my speech.
