Welcome back to Crossland, and welcome to our virtual classroom! This will be a place for you to contact me any time of the day, and a place where we can continue our classroom discussions outside of the classroom. If you have questions or concerns about an assignment, you can reach me here or via email. Every week I will post a blog related to something we're doing in the classroom. Once a week you will be required to respond to the question for a weekly Blog homework assignment.
Week one blog assignment: Tell me about one powerful experience you had over the summer. Using as much description as possible, tell me why this experience had such an impact on you. Did the experience help you grow as an individual? Was it positive or negative? In your response, after your FULL NAME (first and last, no nick names please!) please write the period/day you have me for English class (2A, 3A, 2B, or 3B)!
Again, welcome to a new school year! I look forward to working with you face-to-face in room 222, and I look forward to communicating here in our virtual classroom!

ReplyDeleteOne powerful thing I experienced over the summer is attending a Mentoring Basketball
Camp. During the camp, the coaches showed us several basketball skills and gave us advice on real life issues. This had an impact on me because I am able to use the advice on real situations which was a positive outcome. I feel attending the camp will have an affect on my decisions and growth as a person.
The most powerful thing I experienced this summer was when I went on a fishing trip with my father and family and learned a lot about fishing and about life. My cousin Phil is a fishing 'master' and he taught me a lot of tricks about fishing, while my father talked to me about life. The only thing that I did not like about the trip was that the nice size fish stayed away from our hooks. We hope to have better luck when we go back Labor Day weekend.

ReplyDeletethe most powerful thing i experienced this summer was when i got a job. Im not doing it again because it was boring and i was not getting payed enough. I did learn how to bugget right when the little bit over money I did get and got some nice thing with my money.
Davon, I'm glad the basketball camp taught you skills you can use both on and off the court! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteJustin, I'm glad you had some bonding time with your dad and cousin during your fishing trip. These kind of experiences are so important for young men as they mature. Bravo! Sorry you didn't catch any really big fish! But you caught more than fish during this trip, which was quality time with the poeple who love you. This was a better catch in my book.
Dmarcus, glad you had a summer job. Hey, one of these days you'll have a job you love!
Thanks everyone who responded to this blog so far. This summer I had a good time with my mother-in-law from Hungary. My wife is Hungarian, as I mentioned to you all in class. Her mother was recently diagnosed with cancer, but this summer she was in good spirits, and healthy. She's really fighting off the illness, and it was very moving to spend part of the summer with her before my summer job started. We take our loved ones for granted at times. This experience taught me to spend more quality time with loved ones because we never know what might take them away from us.
I'll see you all in class!
The most powerful thing I've experienced this summer is feeding the needy. My church and I brought-in bags of blankets, socks, chips, juices and made sandwiches then went out to give them away. The powerful thought that was experienced as we arrived at a park full of homeless people was realizing all the things WE DO have is a blessing and how we don't appreciate it because those homeless people wish they had what we aren't grateful for.

I had two very powerful experiences over the summer that will change my life forever.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I went to Australia for 20 days without my parents. I was involved with a program called People to People Ambassador Program. The program is designed to promote peace throughout the world. The privilege to travel around the world and experience different cultures was absolutely amazing.
After I got back from Australia a week later I participated in a ROTC Cadet Officer Leadership Program (C.O.L.P) at camp Shmidt. The program taught me self-discipline, self-respect, good bearing and much more. The program was a week long and I was one of two hundred cadets to graduate from the program.
I feel beyond blessed to have the opportunity to do so many great things this summer.

Breanna,
ReplyDeleteGlad you got a chance to provide service to the needy! I was thinking of organizing a blanket drive this winter for the homeless in the area. Would you want to help me get some Crossland students together to do this when winter hits this year? Let me know!
Delonte,
Wow, Australia! You’ve got to tell our class about this! Remind me to give you some time in class to do this! Sounds like it was a great program.
Kaylen,
So you won’t go to summer school again, right!? I’m sure you’ll do what you need to do to shine in this class and your other classes now that you know how awful summer school is. Make sure you capitalize the beginning of your sentences!
T’Aqua,
Glad you got to spend some quality time with your family over the summer! So important!
Kedejae,
Glad you could spend some good times with your loved ones! Make sure you don’t capitalize every word in your sentences – only the ones that need to be capitalized!
Daris,
Good luck this year with your football team. I’m glad you’re so proud of the team. Make sure you keep your grades up, okay, and make sure you capitalize the future letter in each of your sentences!
Juventina,
Sounds like your mom gave you some tough love this summer, but it also sounds like you learned form the experience.
The most powerful thing I experienced this summer was when I went on a fishing trip with my father and family and learned a lot about fishing and about life.
